Free Sails, Seminars and the Best of Sailing
Coming Soon to Strictly Sail Pacific!
March 23, 2010, Middletown, RI – Show-goers attending the upcoming Strictly Sail Pacific show April 15 – 18 at Oakland’s Jack London Square will have plenty of opportunities to experience the best of sailing during the West Coast’s largest all-sail extravaganza. According to show organizer Sail America, there’s a wealth of fun and excitement in store for everyone, ranging from kids to adults, from seasoned sailors to first-timers alike.
“Strictly Sail Pacific offers the unique opportunity to learn all about the fabulous sailing sport and lifestyle,” said Sail America Executive Director Jonathan Banks. “Top manufacturers and suppliers from the all parts of the world will be on hand to exhibit brand new sailing products along with new and premium pre-owned boats. What’s more, we’ve got free seminars, great parties and an amazing line-up of special events including free sailboat rides, so our show guests can truly discover all that sailing has to offer. The beautiful location right in the heart of Jack London Square offers an excellent choice of restaurants, great deals on hotels and a wonderful place for friends and family to enjoy an unforgettable outing together.”
The exhibit area encompasses more than 150 on-land booths, many of which are located in a climate-controlled indoor facility on the site of the former Barnes & Noble bookstore. The adjacent marina features an in-water display of over 50 new and premium pre-owned boats ranging in size from a 17’ catamaran to the sleek new Jeanneau 57’ bluewater passagemaker. Special features include “The Fun Zone,” featuring splashy small boats and daysailers, and the all-new “Multihull Lagoon” that showcases an impressive collection of multihulls.
Those looking to experience sailing firsthand should head straight to the Discover Sailing dock for a free 45-minute sail with an expert skipper aboard one of the latest boats from Catalina, Hunter and Beneteau. Other free sailing opportunities are available for kids on the schooner SEAWARD, and for children with disabilities through the non-profit organization, Heart of Sailing. SeaLife Conservation is also offering daily sails aboard the 65-foot Derek M. Baylis, a research vessel that focuses on ocean conservation.
Other fun activities include a free tour of the famous DOLPHIN SPIRIT, a Grainger trimaran offshore racer that is gearing up for a mission to save the slaughter of Japan’s dolphins. Show goers may also watch junior sailors participate in Opti-Sailing hosted by the Encinal Yacht Club, and see a Mercury Snipe Regatta right off the show docks.
One of the highlights of Strictly Sail Pacific is the festive parties that bring the sailing community together for a series of special events. “Celebrate TGIF” is a Friday tradition where the exhibits and docks come alive from 6 to 8 pm. The Baja Ha-Ha and Pacific Puddle Jump reunion brings together thousands of sailors who have made the trek across the Pacific Ocean, along with those who are dreaming of the adventure and want to learn more. Without a doubt, the biggest social event of the show is Latitude & Attitudes’ 8th Annual Cruisers Bash beginning at 7 pm Saturday and free to all ticketed guests of the day, so long as they are on premises when the gates close. Free beer, pizza and wine, and music by the popular Eric Stone Band, highlight this sailors’ favorite, along with a host of fantastic prizes including a Caribbean cruise from Sunsail.
To top it all off, Strictly Sail Pacific sports a world-class seminar series sponsored by Blue Water Sailing magazine, with more than 100 seminars running consecutively throughout the show. Topics range the gamut from sailing destinations to women’s sailing, celestial navigation, cooking and fitness onboard, to mastering weather forecasting, cruising/voyaging, and a whole lot more.
“Getting out on the water is a big part of life for those who live on the west coast, so we know there is a lot of interest in learning more about sailing,” said Banks. “Strictly Sail Pacific is the ultimate destination for experienced sailors, and for those who are new to sailing and want to learn more. Strictly Sail Pacific offers plenty for everyone!”
